Listen to the media. We have an example right above. Anderson Cooper and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Cooper can’t even breach the Department of Defense budget. That is unquestionable.

I heard two comments today on local political programs (NBC 4 and CBS 10 local).

And what did they say? Oh gee, now that we have a Democratic House we are already seeing they can’t work together. No compromise. We are sick of it. Bad Democrats.

We really need that media to turn on Trump. That would help…maybe.

They started in on the DNC back when the shutdown began, that first weekend they were discussing aloud how long it would be before the DNC acquiesced to Trump’s demands for wall funding. They’ve been helping the GOP along the way, such as saying aloud that the DNC needs to be looking at what they can get out of the GOP (ex: DACA extension) and bashing the leadership over the head for not making that offer. I saw the suggestion (granted, it was the Daily Caller) where they said that Trump should pull up the Gang of Eight agreement from 2013 and get the DNC to vote against it.

Think about it this way: The media were absolutely certain that the shutdown last January would hurt the DNC in the midterms, that voters would not want to experience that again and so would vote in Republicans to avoid further showdowns over petty shit like Trump’s wall. And there, the dynamic was totally turned around, with the DNC in the position of making demands and the GOP in the position of offering nothing little more than reopening the gov’t. Unless this shutdown truly does continue for the next 2 years, then most people are going to have forgotten about the specifics of it by next year.

The press started this whole thing out from the position that the DNC are wrong and have not really budged from there. Hell, if there were truly being honest, they’d be asking aloud how you can consider the “negotiations” being conducted in good faith when it’s understood that Pence has no real power to negotiate because Donny can just promise to veto any “deal” reached. Or asking why Trump wants $5B and is offering nothing in return besides reopening the gov’t when he doesn’t seem to think it’s all that big a deal that the gov’t is shut down.

Right now, she’s holed up in an airport hotel room, and the flight that she was going to be compelled to board has apparently left without her.

That brings back memories of my start with the Internet. I was working on the Sega Dreamcast software development team and tested their web browser late 1998/early 1999. First political sites I encountered were Buzzflash and Bartcop. From there I found Democratic Underground, Media Whores Online, Talking Points Memo and Daily Howler. Then came MyDD and Daily Kos and eventually I saw a DU post about Charles leaving the conservative movement that linked to Little Green Footballs.

This is a belated reply from an earlier thread.

If I recall correctly, you were thinking about adding some interesting accents to Pre-English American history.

I am assuming that you already cover this, but, ideas might include discussions of the globalization of food, including recipes.

How the Native Americans processed Maize [nixtamalization] to avoid pellagra.(Vitamin B Deficiency) The English never figured this out and pellagra was a problem in many poor parts of the US until quite recently.

Maize (and other less well known grains), turkeys(named because someone thought that they came from turkey, or in the case of Hebrew, from India), tobacco, cacao, potatoes, squash, many bean varieties, tomatoes, cochineal, vanilla, cui :), sweet potatoes, (different from the African yam,), avocado, and chili peppers.

Perhaps why amaranth is so unknown.(Reportedly had an important role in Aztec religion, so the Spaniards suppressed it.)

And, of course, there is tlacatlaolli.

How the spice trade caused the discovery of South America by the Spanish and Portuguese. Beyond Columbus, European ships, in order to avoid Muslim control of the spice trade, had to sail around Cape of Good Hope, but the prevailing currents required that they sail out into the South Atlantic and then sail back. In 1500 a voyage by Cabral doing this bumped into Brazil.

The history of slavery in the Caribbean, and sugar plantations is another example. The depopulation of Native Americans, a Catholic priest who pushed not enslaving them, and the need for cheap labor led to the importation of Africans to work the sugar plantations. Tie-in might be 1811 Louisiana Slave revolt.

Or perhaps the death and destruction caused by the exploration by Francisco Vázquez de Coronado.

Or how Samuel Champlain set off the Iroquois Wars with his 1609 expedition.

And why the French did not settle Massachusetts. (European ships kidnapped, and apparently enslaved a bunch of Nauset tribesman. Who, in turn, started greeting Europeans in a rather hostile fashion.)

A big problem for the early French settlers in Canada was vitamin C deficiency/Scurvy. They turned to the local Native Americans to help them solve this.

Or how some historians believe that the Vikings were chased from Newfoundland because they traded cheese to the Native Americans. But the Native Americans may have had severe lactose intolerance. Thinking themselves poisoned may have caused the Native Americans to look less than kindly upon Vikings.

One thing I know very little about at the moment is Chinese food history and culture. I grew up in the 1960’s and 1970’s when China was very isolated from the West. I have never fixed that deficit beyond eating at local Chinese restaurants. I will need to rectify that.

Since the first Chinese people to come to the USA were predominantly from Guangdong (Canton) and Fujian to the immediate east of Guangdong, most Chinese cuisine in the USA is Cantonese style.

One of the YouTubers I follow, laowhy86, has a tip for finding good Chinese restaurants. Ask the host/hostess if they have a Chinese language menu. If they do, chances are the restaurant has Chinese customers who like its food. The Chinese menu will not be the same as the English one, because some American Chinese dishes do not exist in China (General Tso’s Chicken, for example). So if you want more authentic Chinese food, ask if you can order off the Chinese language menu (with server help).

Checking to see if the local Chinese population views the food as authentic is a good point.

But both favored a specific restaurant near Fairfax Circle, Virginia.

Interestingly, the Taiwan gentleman mentioned that his family used an old Chinese poem when naming children. I do not remember how it worked beyond, apparently, one line or stanza per generation.

Pinyin is the romanized version of Mandarin Chinese, which the Communist government created in the 1950s to help with literacy and to establish a national language (Mandarin) in a nation with dozens of dialects that are mutually unintelligible. Meanwhile, they also “simplified” the characters to reduce the number of strokes required to write them. Again, the goal was to increase literacy by making the thousands of characters easier to remember and write.

Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, and Chinese elsewhere, on the other hand, use Traditional Characters and do not learn pinyin in school.

An example: door, gate
Pinyin: mén (the diacritical denotes rising or second tone)
Simplified: 门

The head of Thailand’s Immigration Bureau said a Saudi woman who fled her family to seek asylum in Australia will not be forcibly deported.

Speaking at the Bangkok airport where Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun refused to board a flight this morning back to the family she fled, Lt. Gen. Surachate Hakparn said just after 4 pm that Thailand has reversed course and will not deport her against her will.

“If deporting her would result in her death, we definitely wouldn’t want to do that,” he said. Asked if about Saudi Arabia’s death penalty for renouncing Islam, he said “their laws are like that.”

“Since Thailand is the Land of Smiles, of course we won’t send someone to their death,” he added.

Story goes that she renounced Islam - and in Saudi Arabia, under their particular interpretation of sharia, apostasy is punishable by death, though in her case, it’s perhaps more likely that her family would probably kill her for either apostasy or bringing “dishonor” to the family.

Hopefully. If not Australia, then perhaps somewhere in the EU or Canada - I’d like to add the USA to that list, but with the current administration, I don’t see that happening.

Personally, if I were POTUS, I’d publicly announce a policy towards Saudi nationals much like we had towards Soviet Bloc nationals or Cubans who wished to defect - that if you fear being persecuted or being killed for being LGBT, or a religious minority or an atheist, the USA will grant you asylum, because we’re America dammit. And if the Saudi government doesn’t like it, well……that’s just too fuckin’ bad.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Trump is an extortionist. He’s a saboteur. He and the GOP are responsible for the ongoing shutdown and they lack any strategy going forward to reopen the government. That’s by design.

They don’t care if it reopens. They don’t care if essential government services aren’t being done. The GOP base thinks government is a waste to be cut, so they can get more sweet tax cuts. Sabotaging govt is what Trump has done best. It’s why his base continues to support him despite the fact that a majority of Americans want government reopened and don’t want a wall.

The wall is bulkshit and value signaling to his white nationalist base. He hasn’t made concessions or made statements offering to give anything up. He’s back to positions he was making earlier in 2018, which isn’t anything new or different. Pence is “negotiating” when he doesn’t have authority to get a deal because Trump will just as easily say no.

There’s no deal to be had with Trump. That’s why Democrats should hold the line and demand a clean CR and force the issue with McConnell. The IRS and NPS are two key areas where this can bite the GOP hard.

National parks are getting hammered during the shutdown because they’ve remained open but lack any essential services, which means that facilities are getting run into the ground adding to the costs. Damage is being done, and the parks are a critical economic generator in many GOP controlled states. Some of those Senators know this, and they have to speak up because their own constituents are going to get hurt the longer this goes on.

The IRS is long maligned, but if you want your refund, you better fund the IRS because they’re not going to issue refunds, conduct audits, and otherwise provide guidance to taxpayers and experts. That means millions of people depending on their refund checks will go without.

And we can throw in HHS and SNAP too.

Trump and the GOP don’t care. They’re reactionary know nothings who don’t even understand how government works or how to govern. They think this shutdown helps them, but in the long term it does the opposite (or it should if the media reported on this accurately instead of magic balance fairying the fuck out of this).

Derived from pecorino, casu marzu goes beyond typical fermentation to a stage of decomposition, brought about by the digestive action of the larvae of the cheese fly Piophila casei. These larvae are deliberately introduced to the cheese, promoting an advanced level of fermentation and breaking down of the cheese’s fats. The texture of the cheese becomes very soft, with some liquid (called lagrima, Sardinian for “teardrop”) seeping out. The larvae themselves appear as translucent white worms, about 8 mm (0.3 in) long.[2]

Casu marzu is created by leaving whole pecorino cheeses outside with part of the rind removed to allow the eggs of the cheese fly Piophila casei to be laid in the cheese. A female P. casei can lay more than 500 eggs at one time.[2][3] The eggs hatch and the larvae begin to eat through the cheese.[4] The acid from the maggots’ digestive system breaks down the cheese’s fats,[4] making the texture of the cheese very soft; by the time it is ready for consumption, a typical casu marzu will contain thousands of these maggots.

Casu marzu is considered by Sardinian aficionados to be unsafe to eat when the maggots in the cheese have died. Because of this, only cheese in which the maggots are still alive is usually eaten, although allowances are made for cheese that has been refrigerated, which can kill the maggots. Wisconsin disliked Clinton and had a bunch of Russian influenced votes go to Stein. Remove those influences and in this last election, despite the gerrymandering, EVERY statewide office went Democrat. Remove those influences and in this last election, despite the gerrymandering, EVERY statewide office went Democrat. Don’t think we have to have Biden - just someone who has positive name recognition rather than negative like Hillary had.

Thanks OA. You’ve said it better than I could. I don’t doubt Biden could be a good candidate and I especially don’t doubt his presidential qualifications. No one who will run will be more qualified for the job than he is but I really do think we need someone younger and as you get at, Biden does have his faults too that will be pounced on.

I disagree. Biden is experienced which is what we need to sell right now to undo all the shit this trump thing has done. On any other election I might agree with you but not this one. His running mate should be young, smart, personable (I do not think we will ever see any POTUS of the future who is not, sadly) and able to pick up two terms after Biden has one.

I think you’re mixing up the idea of voter suppression - preventing people from voting - and under voting - people not to vote for a particular office while voting for other offices. Under voting is typically a choice by voters to not vote in a particular contest - confusing ballots not withstanding (Florida, I’m looking at you). Voter suppression is things like culling voter rolls and/or making it vastly more difficult to vote by reducing polling places, reducing the number of machines available, etc.

It looks like turnout was down about 3% in Wisconsin from 2012 to 2016, which resulted in real vote difference of about 92,000 ballots. Trump won about 2,800 fewer votes than Romney did. Clinton won 238,000 fewer votes than Obama did. A lot more votes went to third party candidates it looks like.

One more point I’ll add: in 2012 there was 1.29% of votes cast for third party candidates (39,483 votes), in 2016 it was 6.32% (188,330 votes). In both years, it looks like most of those votes went to Gary Johnson as the Libertarian nominee.

Ordinarily, I’d say there isn’t much reason to suspect voter suppression, but Scott Walker was governor, and he seems like a real shitheel, so I don’t think it can necessarily be ruled out, at least at the margins. At the end of the day, it was probably a small factor, but I wouldn’t say it was the leading factor.

Cotdammit, those last couple of comments I made about turnout in Wisconsin sent me down a rabbit hole comparing turnout in 2012 and 2016. Apparently, turnout was slightly up in 2016 (less than 1%, in terms of percentage of registered voters). In terms of real votes cast: 133.3m votes were cast in 2016, compared to 128.1m in 2012. Cotdammit, those last couple of comments I made about turnout in Wisconsin sent me down a rabbit hole comparing turnout in 2012 and 2016. Apparently, turnout was slightly up in 2016 (less than 1%, in terms of percentage of registered voters). In terms of real votes cast: 133.3m votes were cast in 2016, compared to 128.1m in 2012. A Florida Man denied ownership of three syringes removed from his rectum during a 4:30 AM strip search at a county jail, according to a criminal complaint.

Cops arrested Wesley Scott, 40, early Friday on an outstanding warrant charging him with drug possession. While being searched in the field, Scott denied having any illegal items concealed on (or in) his body.

But when Scott, seen at right, arrived at the Pinellas County jail and was subjected to a strip search, he “removed three syringes from his rectum and provided them” to a jailer. Scott then claimed that he “found” the syringes and that “they were not his.”

This explanation did not stop officials from charging Scott with introducing contraband into a correctional facility, a felony. He is being held on a $5000 bond.

The court filing does not reveal whether Scott named the purported owner of the syringes that had been found in his rectum. Or whether that individual had consented to his works being stored in such a facility.

Judge tells lawyers for one of the Russian companies indicted by Mueller, Concord Management and Consulting, to quit the infantile BS and buckle up, because their filings are inadequate and one of the lawyers even suggested he might withdraw from the case over the whole thing:

A stern-faced Friedrich, the newest of President Donald Trump’s three appointees to the district court in Washington, made clear Monday that she was not amused by what she called the “clever quotes.” She also chastised Dubelier for ad hominem attacks on Mueller’s attorneys and other prosecutors in the case.

“I found your recent filings, in particular your reply brief filed Friday, unprofessional, inappropriate and ineffective,” the judge said. She suggested the submissions were an effort to bully her into granting pending defense motions to give the owners and officers of Concord greater access to materials Mueller’s office has turned over to permit the defense to prepare for trial.

When Friedrich beckoned Dubelier to the courtroom lectern to address some more technical issues about the exchange of information, he declined to say anything of substance, declaring instead that the judge’s rebuke was so severe that he might need to withdraw from the case. He also accused Friedrich of bias.

“I need to go and discuss this with my client,” said Dubelier, a former federal prosecutor now with law firm Reed Smith. “There appears to be some bias on the part of the court.”

Some bias? That’s rich. Demanding a minimum standard for briefs and filings isn’t bias. Calling out the lawyers for an amateur hour move was entirely within the judge’s rights.

Mixed with Mountain Dew it wasn’t bad. Though it would eat right through a McDonald’s cup and spread misery everywhere..
